Best Time to Visit Morocco: A Region-by-Region 2026 Guide
Morocco's climate splits three ways — coast, mountains, desert. Ten years of data on Marrakech, Fes, Sahara, and Atlantic coast, with month-by-month verdicts.
Morocco is the size of California and spans four climate zones simultaneously. In April, you can ski the Atlas mountains at dawn and dip your feet in the Sahara by sunset. In August, Marrakech hits 45°C while the Atlantic coast at Essaouira stays a breezy 24°C. A question like "what's the best time to visit Morocco?" is really four questions in one.
This guide walks through Morocco's four climate zones — Marrakech and the interior plains, Atlas Mountains, Sahara desert, and Atlantic coast — and tells you when each is at its best.
The short answer
- Best overall months: March, April, October, early November — everywhere in Morocco works simultaneously.
- Coast peak: June, July, August — Essaouira and Agadir bloom while the interior burns.
- Desert peak: October to March — Sahara nights become tolerable, days pleasant.
- Avoid if possible: July-August in Marrakech (extreme heat), January in the High Atlas (snowbound).
The four climate zones
1. Marrakech and interior plains (Fes, Meknes)
Semi-arid continental. Hot dry summers, mild winters, big diurnal swings. This is the Morocco most tourists imagine. See our full Marrakech weather data.
2. Atlas Mountains (Toubkal, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley)
Alpine continental. Snow in winter above 1,500m elevation, cool summers even at valley altitude. High Atlas peaks reach over 4,000m.
3. Sahara desert (Merzouga, Zagora)
Hot desert. Extreme summer temperatures (45°C+), cold winter nights (often near freezing), almost no rain, dramatic diurnal ranges of 20°C+.
4. Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir, Casablanca)
Mediterranean-oceanic. Cooler than the interior year-round, driven by the cold Canary Current. Strong trade winds make Essaouira world-famous for kitesurfing.
Marrakech weather month by month
January in Marrakech
Cool. Average high 18°C, night lows 6°C. Occasional rain (50mm across the month). Blue sky most days but pack layers — the medina restaurants have no heating. Prices are lowest of the year outside the New Year week.
February in Marrakech
Similar to January but drier. Almond trees blossom in the surrounding countryside, turning the roads to Amizmiz and Ourika into photography destinations for two weeks in late February.
March in Marrakech (excellent)
The classic shoulder month. Average high 22°C, sunny days, wildflowers in the Ourika Valley. Comfortable for both medina walking and day trips to the Atlas. SC data shows this is the most-searched Marrakech month. See March data.
April in Marrakech (excellent)
Peak spring. Average high 24°C, occasional 30°C days. Palm groves and gardens (Majorelle, Menara) at their most vivid. Ramadan sometimes falls in April — plan restaurant reservations carefully; some places close daytime during the fast.
May in Marrakech
Warming fast. Average high 28°C, still comfortable for medina exploration in mornings and evenings. Afternoons increasingly punishing. Great for spa-focused travellers who plan around 2-6 PM downtime.
June in Marrakech
Hot. Average high 33°C, low humidity but the sun feels aggressive. Locals start moving to the coast for the summer. Marrakech riads with plunge pools become essential.
July & August in Marrakech (avoid)
Extreme. Average high 37-38°C, spikes to 45°C+ during heatwaves. This is the most-searched combination of "Marrakech" + "weather" — because people are checking after they booked and having second thoughts. Unless you have a pool-focused riad and don't plan to leave the property in daytime, skip these months entirely.
September in Marrakech
Still very warm. Average high 33°C first two weeks, dropping to 30°C by month's end. First real cool spell often arrives in the final week. Not ideal but better than August.
October in Marrakech (excellent)
The best autumn month. Average high 26°C, low humidity, clear skies, still-warm evenings. October is when the tourist season really returns — expect fully booked riads and busy restaurants. Book 4-6 weeks ahead. See October climate.
November in Marrakech (excellent)
Still shoulder-season quality. Average high 22°C, occasional rain (60mm across the month), clear stretches. Great for photographers — the Atlas is often snow-capped while the medina is still comfortable in shirt-sleeves.
December in Marrakech
Cool. Average high 18°C, chilly nights, occasional rain. Christmas and New Year week (Dec 24-Jan 2) sees a huge tourism spike — prices double, restaurants require reservations. Outside those weeks, December is quiet and cheap.
Regional recommendations
Sahara desert (Merzouga camel treks)
Best months: October, November, February, March. Nights become tolerable (5-10°C low), days pleasant (20-25°C). December-January nights drop near freezing. April-September days are dangerous — camel treks unadvisable in daytime, and even nights hit 30°C.
High Atlas trekking (Toubkal, Aroumd)
Best months: April-June, September-October. Snow melts by late April at lower trekking altitudes. Winter (December-February) requires alpine mountaineering gear — Toubkal summit needs crampons and ice axe from November onwards.
Essaouira Atlantic coast (kitesurfing, seafood)
Best months: May-October for kitesurfing (strong trade winds); April-June and September-October for beach days without wind. Winter is chilly and grey. Essaouira never gets hot even in August — sea breezes keep it at 24°C while Marrakech burns at 42°C 2 hours inland.
Fes medina exploration
Best months: March-May, September-November. Fes is slightly cooler than Marrakech year-round due to higher elevation. The medina is walkable in shoulder seasons; summer heat trapped between the tanneries and narrow alleys is oppressive.
Two-week itinerary weather planning
Classic circuit — best in October or April
Marrakech (3) → High Atlas Aroumd (2) → Ait Ben Haddou (1) → Sahara Merzouga (2) → Fes (3) → Chefchaouen (2) → back to Marrakech. October gives you post-summer green desert; April gives you spring wildflowers.
Coast + city — best in June or September
Casablanca (2) → Essaouira (3) → Marrakech (4) → coast (2). Avoids the extreme interior heat by keeping most of the trip on the coast.
What to pack for Morocco
- Year-round: Modest clothing for medinas (long sleeves, long trousers for Fes especially), sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, keffiyeh or scarf (for sun and dust)
- Sahara add-ons: Warm fleece for nights (even summer nights get cool), sunglasses (glare on sand), a headlamp
- Winter (Dec-Feb) add-ons: Warm jacket, gloves for the Atlas, waterproof for coastal trips
- Summer coast add-ons: Swimsuit, quick-dry towel, water shoes for rocky Essaouira coves
The verdict
For a first Morocco trip that combines Marrakech, the mountains, and a taste of the desert, target early April or mid-October. Both offer country-wide usability with wildflowers or golden autumn light respectively. If you're beach-focused, June-September on the Atlantic coast. If you want the desert experience specifically, October to March.
