Best Time to Visit the Maldives: Dry Season 2026 Guide

The best time to visit the Maldives is December to April — dry, sunny, calm sea. But shoulder-season May and November save 30-40%.

The best time to visit the Maldives is December through April — the dry season. Ten-year climate data confirms it: less rain, calmer seas, better visibility for diving. But the peak-season pricing means you pay a real premium, and the shoulder months (May, November) offer meaningful savings with only modest weather compromise.

The dry season: December – April

These five months average 29°C by day, 25°C at night, with rainfall dropping to under 100mm per month and up to 8 hours of daily sunshine. The northeast monsoon delivers calm seas — ideal for snorkeling, diving, and photography. February and March are typically the driest months.

This is also peak season, meaning peak prices. A water villa that costs $600 per night in November is $1,200+ per night in February. Book six to nine months out.

The wet season: May – November

Summer brings the southwest monsoon: more rain (up to 250mm per month in June), less sunshine (5 hours per day), and rougher seas on the west sides of atolls. But — and this is important — the wet season is not constant rain. Most days see a heavy afternoon shower followed by clearing. Rainfall is dramatic rather than persistent.

Resort rates drop 40–60% during the wet season. Divers can still enjoy the east sides of atolls where visibility remains good. Rooms are available last-minute.

The sweet spot: April and November

Ask any Maldives resort manager for the ideal month, and they'll say April — the tail end of dry season, still calm, but with prices beginning to soften. November is the reverse — dry season returning, but not yet at peak pricing.

These two months save you 20–30% versus February-March, and the weather remains excellent.

For diving specifically

The Maldives diving season depends on where you go. Manta rays gather in Baa Atoll from June to November (wet season). Whale sharks are year-round but easier to find in South Ari Atoll from December to April. If you have a specific marine encounter in mind, timing matters more than general weather.

Quick verdict

  • December – March: Peak weather, peak prices. For honeymoons and premium water villas.
  • April: Ideal balance — great weather, slightly softer prices.
  • May – July: Wet season, best for value seekers who don't mind afternoon rain.
  • August – October: Wettest months. Only go if very flexible on weather.
  • November: Dry season returning — great value shoulder period.
