A destination worth the flight.
Yellowknife at 62 degrees north sits under one of Earth's clearest aurora corridors and one of North America's harshest winters. Eleven complete years (2015-2025) show January averaging -26C with regular -40C nights, July at 17C during the brief boreal summer window with 20-hour daylight. Great Slave Lake — the deepest lake in North America — freezes solid from November to June.
March, August, and September are the strongest months. March delivers aurora at peak visibility with slightly milder -15C temperatures than midwinter, longer daylight than January, and reliable ice-road access to Dettah. August sits at 15C for the summer aurora reopening (dark returns August 15), and September brings 8C with autumn tundra colors, Cameron Falls hikes, and aurora nights extending to 12 hours dark by month-end.
January and April are the months to skip. January averages -26C with regular -40C — outside time capped at 15 minutes and even locals limit walks between buildings. April brings breakup season with Great Slave Lake ice cracking, ice-road closures cutting off Dettah community, and neither snow-safe nor summer-ready conditions.
For 2026, book March aurora tours by September 2025 — Aurora Village lodges sell out first. Late August remains the year's best combined weather-plus-aurora combination as darkness returns.
