Tallinn's year runs on Baltic light. January averages -5C and the sea sometimes freezes solid enough to cross-country ski from Kadriorg park to Pirita by headlamp, June and July stretch the White Nights past 11pm on Toompea hill, August brings the Old Town Days medieval fair to Raekoja Plats, and October drizzle slicks the Toompea limestone for weeks.

Mid-June through July is when Old Town Days fills the square with 15th-century reenactments, Aegna and Naissaar island ferries run frequently, and the Telliskivi Creative City in the former Soviet industrial complex hits its peak evening stride. Eat at F-hoone or Peatus for Estonian-Nordic fusion, greet with tere never privet, and remember that Estonia is not Russian — locals will correct you sharply.

Skip January unless you specifically want the cross-country ski across a frozen Baltic. Skip November too, when the Toompea limestone is slick with weeks of drizzle and locals switch to knee-high boots and long wool socks under jeans.

For 2026, target the last two weeks of June or the first ten days of September when Pirita beach still swims but the cruise-ship density drops. Pack a merino wool base layer even in July — Baltic breeze off Pirita drops evening temperatures 12 degrees in an hour — and buy must leib black bread at Rimi to eat with sprats and sour cream.
