A destination worth the flight.
Porto's mild-oceanic climate is wetter than Lisbon and cooler in summer than most travelers expect. Eleven complete years (2015-2025) show January averaging 10C with 16 rain days, July at 20C with fog rolling off the Atlantic most mornings until 11:00. Autumn holds warmth deep into October, and spring arrives earlier than the rest of Iberia.
May, June, and September are the strongest months. May averages 16C with azalea blooms across the Crystal Palace gardens, June brings the Sao Joao festival on the 23rd — the year's calendar peak with plastic-hammer street parties from Ribeira to Foz. September sits at 19C during Douro Valley harvest with quinta tours running full schedules through the second half of the month.
December and January are the months to avoid despite mild temperatures. Both hit 10C but with 16-17 rain days each — heavier and more persistent than the daily drizzle in Lisbon. Ribeira gets uncomfortable in the wet, and half the port-lodge tours in Vila Nova de Gaia move indoors only. February improves rapidly.
For 2026, book Sao Joao week (June 20-25) by early March — Ribeira apartments sell out first. September Douro harvest cruises sell out at 2025's pricing — reserve by April for the Regua-Pinhao routes.
