A destination worth the flight.
Here's the thing about Osaka that catches a lot of people off guard: it's genuinely humid and rainy for much of the year. The city logs around 1,758mm of rainfall annually—nearly double what you'd get in London—and that shapes everything about when you should actually go. November is your goldmine month. Highs hover around 17–20°C (63–68°F), humidity finally drops below that sticky threshold, and you get crisp mornings perfect for wandering Dotonbori without feeling like you're inside a sauna. The city's autumn foliage peaks around mid-November too, which sounds touristy but genuinely changes how the neighborhoods feel.
Each month in the November window has its own vibe. Early November still carries a bit of summer warmth—17°C (63°F)—and the crowds are thinner because most people assume it's too cold. Late November (around 14°C/57°F) is when locals actually venture out in earnest; you'll see more families in the parks, and restaurant patios get busier. October can work as a shoulder option if November books up, though you're still dodging the tail end of September's humidity. December gets nippy—around 9°C (48°F)—and rainy, so November really is the Goldilocks window.
Avoid June, July, and September like they owe you money. June and July are the tsuyu rainy season—we're talking 200mm-plus of rain some weeks, temperatures climbing to 28–30°C (82–86°F), and humidity that makes your phone screen fog up. September is typhoon season; you might catch a direct hit or just get sideways rain and closed attractions. August is technically fewer typhoons, but the heat alone—regularly hitting 33°C (91°F)—makes walking around exhausting. Your average daily sunshine across the year is only 8.6 hours, so summer's heat doesn't even come with the trade-off of blue skies.
Looking at the bigger picture for 2026: Japan's climate has been creeping warmer over the past decade, and Osaka's autumn window has become slightly more compressed. What used to be comfortable shoulder months (late September, early October) now feel muggy into mid-October. That November-to-early-December sweet spot is narrower than it was fifteen years ago, so booking sooner rather than later makes sense if you're set on that crisp-air experience.
