A destination worth the flight.
Madeira's Atlantic subtropical climate is more stable than the Canaries and cooler in summer. Eleven complete years (2015-2025) show Funchal averaging 17C January to 23C July with monthly averages never varying more than 6C across the whole year. Rainfall concentrates October through March, but the south coast stays drier than the north-facing levadas by 2x.
April, May, and September deliver Madeira at its calendar peak. April sits at 18C with the Flower Festival programming Funchal's Avenida Arriaga through the third week — jacaranda peak comes right after. May brings 20C with levada walks (25 de Fontes, Caldeirao Verde) at their driest access, and September holds 23C with ocean swimming at Ponta do Sol and Machico beaches. Wine harvest events run through the second half of September in Estreito de Camara de Lobos.
November and February are the softer months. November averages 20C but takes 12 rain days with levada trails frequently closed after storms. February holds 17C but sits in the year's cloudiest stretch — Pico do Arieiro is fogged out most mornings, cutting off Madeira's top day-hike.
For 2026, book Flower Festival week (mid-April) by January — Funchal hotels sell out 8 weeks ahead. September remains the year's best combined weather-plus-harvest month.
Madeira, four ways.
Every destination is really four destinations, worn by the seasons. Here — the four faces of the year in Madeira.

No months are especially difficult here.
Flight prices, month by month.
Estimated round-trip fares from London, based on a 7-day stay. Rule-of-thumb pricing — the cheapest windows tend to be the shoulder months, so a shift of a fortnight can pay for a hotel.
★ June looks like the cheapest month for flights to Madeira — often £108 less than the peak. Fares refresh daily; live prices below.
