The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Fairbanks at 64 degrees north experiences one of North America's widest annual temperature swings. Eleven complete years (2015-2025) show January averaging -22C with regular -40C stretches and heavy ice fog around town, July peaking at 22C during the midnight sun window — Fairbanks hosts the Midnight Sun Baseball Game on June 21 without stadium lights. The aurora is visible on 200+ nights per year under clear skies.

March, August, and September form the strongest windows. March brings aurora at peak visibility with -10C temperatures more manageable than January, plus the Iditarod ceremonial start in Anchorage drawing crossover visitors. August sits at 18C with darkness returning around August 20 for early-season aurora, Denali highway access still open, and berry-picking across White Mountains. September holds 8C with autumn tundra, Chena River fall runs, and aurora nights extending to 10 hours dark by end of month.

December and April are the closure-adjacent months to skip. December sits at -20C with 4 hours of dim light — ice fog frequently blocks aurora viewing 8-10 nights in a row. April brings breakup season with Chena River ice going out, dog-sled tours ending, and neither winter-safe nor summer-ready trail conditions.

For 2026, book March aurora week by September 2025 — Chena Hot Springs Resort sells out first. Late August remains the year's most-daylight-plus-aurora combination as viewing nights return.

By the month
§ IV

Flight prices, month by month.

Estimated round-trip fares from London, based on a 7-day stay. Rule-of-thumb pricing — the cheapest windows tend to be the shoulder months, so a shift of a fortnight can pay for a hotel.

★ June looks like the cheapest month for flights to Fairbanks — often £130 less than the peak. Fares refresh daily; live prices below.
